Chapter 15, Problem 75P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To explain the product formed when a tertiary amine reacts with acyl chloride.

Concept introduction:

Amines are nitrogen-containing organic compounds.  The general formula of amines is RNH2.  Amines can be classified as primary amine, secondary amine, and tertiary amine.  Primary amines contain two acidic hydrogens, secondary amines contain one acidic hydrogen and tertiary amines contain no acidic hydrogen.

The question is to predict the product of the following amine addition reactions. Thank you a lot!
Write the mechanism for the reaction between a secondary amine and excess alkyl halide to form the product shown. show each step.
When the (R,R) isomer of the amine shown is treated with an excess of methyl iodide, then silver oxide, then heated, the majorproduct is the Hofmann product.) Some Zaitsev product is also formed. It has the (E) configuration. When the same amine is treated with mCPBA and heated, theZaitsev product has the (Z) configuration. Use stereochemical drawings of the transition states to explain these observations
