Question
Chapter 15.3, Problem 15.9P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The chiral center in 3-methyl-3-sulfanyl-1-hexanol compound should be located and both the enantiomers should be drawn.
Concept Introduction:
Compounds containing four different groups attached to them are known as chiral compound and that carbon is known as chiral carbon. The chiral carbon in given compound is represented by placing an asterisk (*) symbol over that carbon atom.

Although fresh human sweat has no odor, enzymes in skin bacteria form a variety of compounds with distinctive, pungent odors. The two enantiomers of 3-methyl-3-sulfanyl-1-hexanol (A), which smell somewhat differently, contribute to the characteristic foul odor of sweat. Locate the chirality center in A and draw both enantiomers
(a) assign R or S configuration to each chiral center,
(b) Which compound are enantiomers?
(c) Which compounds are diastereomers?
Olfactory receptors in our noses, used for the detection of odors, are chiral. Therefore, in some
cases, we can tell the difference between enantiomers by their odor. Carvone is one such compound
that we can distinguish between the R and S enantiomer by their odor.
br
1. Identify the chiral center in carvone and draw the R and S enantiomers in the indicated boxes.
