The partial pressures of respiratory gases (PO2 and PCO2) and the pH (potential of hydrogen) may change during exercise. To keep pace with the increased metabolism,ventilation also increases. Ventilation occurs in the lungs to maintain the pH of the blood and to maintain aproper gaseous exchange between the blood and the lungs.
