Chapter 16, Problem 1CTQ
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The tangy sea air, as well as motion of water under the feet, were felt by Joni when she first stepped onto the sailboat. After sometime, Joni no longer noticed any smell but was attentive of the rolling motion of water for hours.

The types of receptors that are involved in the detection of the smell of tangy sea air and motion.

The reason for the fading smell sensation and remaining the rolling sensation.

Introduction:

Sensory receptors are either dendrite of a sensory nerve cell or a specialized cell. Every sensory receptor is activated by a particular type of alterations in the environment. The sensory receptors are categorized in different classes on the basis of microscopic structure (free nerve ending or separate cells), type of stimulus detected (mechanoreceptors, nociceptors, chemoreceptors, photoreceptors, or thermoreceptors), as well as origin of stimuli and location of receptors (exteroceptors, proprioceptors, and interoceptors).
