Question
Chapter 16, Problem 2Q
Summary Introduction
To review:
The comparison of the effect of the drugs upon the single and combined use. The conclusions that can be drawn from the results regarding the combined effect of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) methylation and histone acetylation on gene expression in these cells.
Given:
The table given below shows the individual as well as the combined effect of the drugs on the DNA methylation and histone acetylation.
Treatment | |||
Untreated control of mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) transcript of: | AZA | TSA | AZA+TSA |
Gene 1 | 7 | 23 | 25 |
Gene 2 | <1 | <1 | 11 |
Introduction:
Two different compounds AZA and TSA are used to inhibit the enzymes DNA methyltransferase and histone deacetylase, respectively. The researchers studied the effects of the inhibitors both combinedly and separately.

Discuss the method and experiments where Simplifying Protein Expression with myTXTL is used
Microsomal enzyme induction is often brought about by drugs stimulating gene transcription, which increases production of the enzyme. But enzyme activity can also be increased through a process that interferes with the degradation of an enzyme. How could a drug induce a microsomal enzyme by inhibiting its degradation as opposed to stimulating drug transcription?
Give typing answer with explanation and conclusion
a) List three eukaryotic gene expression mechanisms that do not occur in prokaryotes. For two of these, give specific examples and the functional outcomes.
b) Describe what is meant by the term “RNA silencing”.
c) Using diagrams, give two examples of RNA silencing mechanisms and indicate one difference.
