Chapter 16, Problem 2TC

The Hawaiian Islands are located thousands of kilometers from any mainland. Each island arose from the sea bottom and was colonized by plants and animals that drifted in on ocean currents or winds. Each island has a unique environment in which its inhabitants have evolved consequently, most of the plant and animal species on the islands do not exist anywhere else in the world.
In contrast, on the islands of the Florida Keys, there are no unique or indigenous species. All of the species on those islands also exist on the mainland
Suggest an explanation for these two different patterns of speciation.

Earth has experienced numerous extinction events over time, some large and some small, but the historic pattern suggests that biodiversity has always rebounded and even increased strongly over the past 200 million years. This increase can probably be attributed to all of the following except Group of answer choices accumulation over time of diverse taxa with different lifestyles increase in land surface area over time separation of continents into independent land masses increase in diversity of habitats found on the earth’s surface
If sea otters are removed from the kelp forest ecosystem, sea urchins will be able to live and reproduce with no main predator. Whole “herds” of sea urchins have been known to sweep across the ocean floor, gobbling kelp stands at a rate of up to 30 feet per month and leaving barren sea floor in their wake. Once barren, the entire kelp forest ecosystem is destroyed and can no longer support the diversity of life once found there. The EVIDENCE above supports the CLAIM that which animal along the Central California coast is considered a keystone species?
Since different species may occupy the same habitat, explain why they continue to remain separate species? Adaptive radiation is when populations diverge from a common ancestor into new species, each of which is adapted to its own unique niche. Provide evidence to highlight an example as to how this may have occurred in some of the species of penguins.  What types of biological evidence would you need to look at to determine evolutionary relatedness between penguin species? **ALL ANSWERS ARE ABOUT THE SPECIES OF PENGUINS**
