Chapter 16, Problem 59P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To identify the relation between ATP and phosphofructokinase (PFK) from the given graph.

Concept introduction:

Glycolysis is also termed as Embden-Meyerhof pathway. It involves the breakdown of one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate. During this reaction, two molecules of ATP are used up in the preparatory phase. Further, in the payoff phase, two molecules of ATP and two molecules of NADH are produced.

Efficiency of ATP Production in Muscle: The transformation of glucose to lactate in myocytes releases only about 7% of the free energy released when glucose is completely oxidized to CO2 and H2O. Does this mean that anaerobic glycolysis in muscle is a wasteful use of glucose? Explain.
a- During intense exercise the transformation glucose to lactate causes very less ATP production compared to aerobic glycolysis. Explain, does anaerobic glycolysis lead to waste of energy in muscle?  b-Glycogen phosphorylase enzyme catalyzes the removal of glucose from glycogen. Describe, glycogen metabolism regulation through glycogen phosphorylase.
Additional information: ATP production by the ETC and ATP Synthase per glucose varies somewhat depending on the energy required to move NADH into the mitochondria and other energy uses for the hydrogen-ion gradient. Additional questions: 1.) How many ATP's are generally yielded by oxidative phosphorylation from the catabolism of one glucose? 2.) Summarize the total ATP's obtained from a single molecule of glucose, from start to finish?  asap
