To explain: The relationship between metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus.

Concept introduction: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of five risk factors, namely increased blood pressure, insulin resistance, obesity, high serum triglycerides, and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of metabolic disorders in which the sugar level is high in blood, for a prolonged period. During this condition, the beta cells of the pancreas produce little or no insulin. Diabetes mellitus is classified into type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.
