Concept introduction:
In an atom, the sum of the number of protons and neutrons is called the mass number. The number which is written on the upper left corner in the symbol of particle represents the mass number.
The atomic number is the number of protons present in an atom. The number which is written on the lower left corner in the symbol of particle represents the atomic number or charge of the particle.
The particles are symbolized as:
Here, X is the symbol of particle, A is the mass number and Z is the atomic number.
