Answer to Problem 10STP

The scale-ray diagram that will show the image height is shown in Figure 1.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Height of an object is ho=5.0 cm = 5×102 m

Distance between the object and the convex mirror is do=20.0 cm = 0.2 m

Focal length of a convex mirror is f=14.0 cm = 0.14 m

Formula used:

The relationship between the object distance (do) , image distance (di) and the focal length (f) of a mirror is given by,

  1f=1do+1di

  1di=1f1do

  1di=doffdo

  di=fdodof (1)

The magnification (M) equation gives the relationship between the image height (hi) , object height (ho) , image distance (di) , and object distance (do) as,

  M=hiho=dido

  hiho=dido

  hi=didoho (2)

Calculation:

Image position can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equation (1) ,

  di=(0.14 m)(0.2 m)(0.2 m)(0.14 m)

  =0.028 m20.34 m= 0.082 m = 8.2 cm

Image height can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equation (2) ,

  hi=( 0.082 m)(0.2 m)(5×102 m)

  =2.05×102 m=2.05 cm

Scale-ray diagram showing the image height is shown in figure 1.
