Interpretation: The particle size of different types of mixtures is to be compared and evaluated.
Concept introduction: A mixture is made up of two or more different chemical substances which are not
Answer to Problem 120A
Solutions have the smallest particles. Suspensions contain the largest particle.
Explanation of Solution
A solution is a homogeneous mixture where the particles are uniformly distributed. The particle size is less than 1 nanometre in diameter. Example: Salt in water
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture where the particles can be physically observed. The particle size is larger than 1000 nanometres in diameter. If a suspension is allowed to stand the particles will separate. Example: Sand in water
A colloid is also a heterogenous mixture but the particles in colloids are significantly smaller than in suspension where the particles are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. The particle size is between 1 to 1000 nanometres in diameter. Example: Milk in water.
On comparing the particle size, it can be seen that solutions have the smallest particles and suspensions have the largest particles. Colloids have particle size intermediate to solutions and colloids.
Thus, solutions have the smallest particles and suspensions have the largest particles.
