Textbook Problem

During a soil exploration program, the following choices were available for soil sampling:• Shelby tube A: Outside diameter, Do = 101.6 mm; inside diameter, Di = 98.4 mm• Shelby tube B: Outside diameter, Do = 89 mm; inside diameter, Di = 85.7 mm• Split spoon sampler: Outside diameter, Do = 50.8 mm; inside diameter, Di = 34.9 mmCalculate the area ratio for each case and determine the suitability of each sampler for the soil characterization tests specified in Problem 17.1.

To determine

Find the area ratio for each case and determine the suitability for each sampler for the given soil characterization tests.

Explanation

Given information:

The outside diameter (Do) for Shelby tube A is 101.6mm.

The outside diameter (Do) for Shelby tube B is 89mm.

The inside diameter (Di) for Shelby tube A is 98.4mm.

The inside diameter (Di) for Shelby tube B is 85.7mm.

The split spoon outside diameter (Do) is 50.8mm

The split spoon inside diameter (Di) is 34.9mm

Calculation:

Find the area ratio for (Ar) Shelby tube A using the Equation as follows:

Ar(%)=Do2Di2Di2×100 (1)

Substitute 101.6mm for Do and 98.4mm for Di in Equation (1).

Ar(%)=101.6298.4298.42×100=10,322.569,682.569,682.56×100=0.0660×100=6.61%

A soil sample usually can be considered undisturbed if the area ratio is less than or equal to 10%.

Thus, the area ratio for Shelby tube A is 6.61%_.

Find the area ratio for (Ar) Shelby tube B using the Equation as follows:

Substitute 89mm for Do and 85
