The plates are 6.5cm long and 1.3cm apart with a potential difference of 250V and the potential at the horizontal plate is 5500 V .

Formula used:

The potential energy is given by

  PE = qV

Where,

  q is the charge of an electron.

  V is the voltage applied.

The kinetic energy is given by K.E=12mv2

Where,

  m is the mass of an electron.

  v is the velocity of the electron.

The time taken by the electron to travel the horizontal distance is t =xv

Where,

  x is the distance travelled.

The electric field acting on the charged particle is F = qE

Where,

  E is the electric field applied.

According to Newton’s second law,

  F = ma

Where,

  a is the acceleration of the particle.

The angle of the direction of the path of the electron is given by tanθ =vyvx

  tan θ =E×x2V

Calculation:

The horizontal component of the velocity will not change as the electron passed through the plates and the potential energy is equal to the kinetic energy. Now, let vy be the final velocity and ux be the initial velocity in the time period t .So the acceleration is vy- uxt . Apply these values to find the velocity in y-direction with ux=0 . Now apply the values to find tanθ and then take the inverse to find θ which is the required angle.

The electric field in the y direction is 2500.013

  =19230.77V/m

The angle θ is θ = tan-1((19230.77×102)(6.5)2(2200))

  θ =tan-1(0.284)

  θ=15.860
