Concept explainers
A piece of transparent plastic is molded into the shape of a converging lens, but it is hollow inside and has only a thin plastic wall. If immersed in water, would this air-filled lens act as a converging lens, act as a diverging lens, or not act as a lens at all?

- A thin lens has two focal points, one on either side of the lens at equal distances from its center, and should behave the same for light entering from either side. Look backward and forward through a pair of eyeglasses and comment on whether they are thin lenses.arrow_forwardAn object of height 2 cm is placed at 50 cm in front of a diverging lens of focal length 40 cm. Behind the lens, there is a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm placed 30 cm from the converging lens. Find the location, orientation, and size of the final image.arrow_forwardAu object of height 3.0 cm is placed at 25 cm in front of a diverging lens of focal length 20 cm. Behind the diverging lens, there is a converging lens of focal length 20 cm. The distance between the lenses is 5.0 cm. Fluid the location and size of the final image.arrow_forward
- The radius of curvature of the left-hand face of a flint glass biconvex lens (n = 1.60) has a magnitude of 8.00 cm, and the radius of curvature of the right-hand face has a magnitude of 11.0 cm. The incident surface of a biconvex lens is convex regardless of which side is the incident side. What is the focal length of the lens if light is incident on the lens from the left?arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true of a concave lens? (7.4) (a) It is a converging lens. (b) It is thicker at the center than at the edge. (c) It is a lens that forms virtual images for Do f. (d) It is a lens that forms real images for Do f.arrow_forwardA lamp of height S cm is placed 40 cm in front of a converging lens of focal length 20 cm. There is a plane mirror 15 cm behind the lens. Where would you find the image when you look in the mirror?arrow_forward
- An object of height 3 cm is placed at a distance of 25 cm in front of a converging lens of focal length 20 cm, to be referred to as the first lens. Behind the lens there is another converging lens of focal length 20 cm placed 10 cm from the first lens. There is a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm placed 50 cm from the second lens. Find the location, orientation, and size of the final image.arrow_forwardFigure P38.43 shows a concave meniscus lens. If |r1| = 8.50 cm and |r2| = 6.50 cm, find the focal length and determine whether the lens is converging or diverging. The lens is made of glass with index of refraction n = 1.55. CHECK and THINK: How do your answers change if the object is placed on the right side of the lens? FIGURE P38.43arrow_forwardUnder what circumstances will an image be located at the focal point of a spherical lens or mirror?arrow_forward
- The left face of a biconvex lens has a radius of curvature of magnitude 12.0 cm, and the right face has a radius of curvature of magnitude 18.0 cm. The index of refraction of the glass is 1.44. (a) Calculate the focal length of the lens for light incident from the left. (b) What If? After the lens is turned around to interchange the radii of curvature of the two faces, calculate the focal length of the lens for light incident from the left.arrow_forwardWhen you focus a camera, you adjust the distance of the lens from the film. If the camera lens acts like a thin lens, why can it not be a fixed distance from the film for both near and distant objects?arrow_forwardIt has become common to replace the cataract-clouded lens of the eye with an internal lens. This intraocular lens can be chosen so that the person has perfect distant vision. Will the person be able to read without glasses? If the person was nearsighted, is the power of the intraocular lens greater or less than the removed lens?arrow_forward
