Chapter 18, Problem 28P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for the rotation of c subunits of ATP synthase.

Concept introduction:

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the energy source in the human body. It is formed in mitochondria, due to this mitochondria is also termed as the powerhouse of the cells. ATP contains three highly energetic phosphate groups. When any kind of energy consuming activity is performed by the body, then these phosphate groups get hydrolyzed from ATP, yielding a large amount of energy.

Working at cross-purposes? Gluconeogenesis takes place during intense exercise, which seems counterintuitive. Why would an organism synthesize glucose and at the same time use glucose to generate energy?
Why bother to eat? What are the three primary uses for cellular energy?
Efficiency of ATP Production in Muscle: The transformation of glucose to lactate in myocytes releases only about 7% of the free energy released when glucose is completely oxidized to CO2 and H2O. Does this mean that anaerobic glycolysis in muscle is a wasteful use of glucose? Explain.
