An ionic crystal.
Answer to Problem 9RQ
A solid crystal made up of oppositely charged ions having electrostatic attraction force generating ionic bonds between them are called as ionic crystal.
Explanation of Solution
An ionic crystal is a crystalline compound constitutes charged ions having an ionic bond. An ionic bond is a bond present between ions. The atoms involved in ionic bonds must containlarge difference in their electronegativities. The atoms containing less electronegativity tend to furnish electrons and generate positive ion and atoms containing large electronegativity tend to gain electrons and generate negative ion.
The positive and negative ions tend to attract together through electrostatic force of attraction and that generates ionic bond between them. The ionic compounds are usually found in a form of crystals and are called an ionic crystal.
Thus, ionic crystals are basically crystalline compound having ionic bonds and are generatedfrom oppositely charged ions.
Conclusion:
Therefore, a solid crystal made up of oppositely charged ions having electrostatic attraction force generating ionic bonds between them are called as ionic crystal.
