Concept explainers
(a)
To explain: The reason behind the accumulation of cessation of lactate after the addition of oxygen.
Introduction:
Louis Pasteur observed that when oxygen is added to anaerobic cells consuming high amount of glucose, rate of glucose consumption declines. Along with the decline in consumption of glucose, accumulation of lactate ceases.
(b)
To explain: The reason behind the decrease in the rate of glucose consumption in presence of oxygen.
Introduction:
The cells perform two types of respiration, namely aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, the cells use oxygen and NADH is reoxidized through oxidative phosphorylation. In anaerobic respiration, NADH is reoxidized through lactic acid fermentation.
(c)
To explain: The way through which oxygen consumption slow down rate of consumption of glucose.
Introduction:
The cells perform two types of respiration, namely- aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, the cells use oxygen and NADH is reoxidized through oxidative phosphorylation. In anaerobic respiration, NADH is reoxidized through lactic acid fermentation.
