(a)
To determine: The filtration rate of inulin and X.
Introduction: The excretory system consists of one pair of kidneys, one pair of ureters, a urethra, and a bladder. Each kidney has a total of about 1 million small nephrons. Inulin is described as a polysaccharide obtained from the tuberous roots of different kinds of plants.
(b)
To determine: The excretion rate of inulin and X.
Introduction: The excretion occurs outside the body from the lumen. The amount of the type of substrate excreted in the urine considers the net handling of that particular substance at the time of its flow through the nephron. The amount that is excreted equates to the filtered amount in the tubule, subtracting the reabsorbed amount in the blood, and adding the secreted amount in the tubule lumen.

- A urinalysis reveals that the patients urine contains glucose, hemoglobin, and white blood cells (pus). Are any of these substances abnormal in urine? Explain.arrow_forwardGiven: A patient’s GFR (glomerular filtration rate) is 125 ml/min, and his urine is produced at a rate of 1.25 ml/min. (A) By what factor is the inulin concentrate in his urine. (B) The concentration of glucose in his plasma is 5 mmol/l. His renal reabsorption of glucose is completely inhibited. What would be the concentration of glucose in his urine? (answer parts a and b)arrow_forwardA patient’s GFR is 125 ml/min, and his urine is produced at a rate of 1.25 ml/min. (A) By what factor is the inulin concentrate in his urine. - Given: For urea, the rate of excretion equals to the GFR times the urea concentration in plasma. (A) If the urea concentration in plasma is 4.5 mmol/l, what GFR (in l/day) would correspond to an excretion rate of 450 mmol/day. (B) If the urea clearance is 70 ml/min and the GFR is 125 ml/min, what fraction of urea is being reabsorbed. (answer A and B)arrow_forwardWhat two quantities make up “H1 excretion”? Why can this term beequated with “contribution of new HCO32 to the plasma”?arrow_forwardThe Na+-glucose transporters SGLT2 and SGLT1 are located at different levels of the kidney proximal tubule to minimize spillover of the glucose into the urine (See diagram attached) a) Consider the Na+-glucose coupling ratios for SGLT2 and SGLT1. Why would localization of SGLT2 in the early proximal tubule and SGLT1 in the late proximal tubule be advantageous? b) The Michaelis constant (Km) for the SGLT2 and SGLT1 transporters are 2 mM and 0.5 mM, respectively. Is SGLT2 or SGLT1 the higher affinity Na+-glucose transporter? d) Dapagliflozin is an SGLT1 inhibitor and commonly prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes. Why would this be of benefit to a diabetes patient?arrow_forward
- there is a known cause of high blood pressure that occurs because of a reduced fluid flow that triggers RAAS and Na+ reaborption with increased blood volume and pressure. what is it?arrow_forwardSeverely malnourished individuals, depleted of proteins and other solutes in their plasma, experience extreme edema which can result in the appearance of distended abdomens. The following is a graph of the typical blood and osmotic pressures in the capillaries of a healthy, well-nourished individual. A. Which graph (A-D) most closely resembles how the pressures might change in a malnourished person to result in the initial appearance of edema. B. Briefly explain how this pressure change results in edema.arrow_forwardGiven the following volumes, calculate the Net Filtration: BP=30 mmHg, IF Osm Pressure=1 mmHg, Blood colloid osm pressure=22 mmHg, IF hydrostatic pressure=0 mmHgarrow_forward
- By how much, and in which direction, will EK be altered by (a) halving and (b) multiplying by five the concentration of K+ in the saline?arrow_forwardGiven: The concentration of glucose in the blood is 1 mg/mL. This person then decides to go for a brisk run, which doubles GFR. a. What effect will this have on the amount of inulin and glucose present in their urine? Why? (answer a )arrow_forwardWhy does exogenous erythropoietin (EPO) effectively treat anemia due to renal failure but is ineffective in treating the other four types?arrow_forward
