Concept explainers
(a)
To determine:
Are the symptoms show up in man, of athlete’s foot disease and what are the tests that can be performed in the lab to determine the disease and its causative agent. What are the treatments for the disease and if more than one fungal species are found then given medication will be same or will vary.
Case summary:
A 30 years old man is suffering from itching, redness, and peeling of the skin of sole of feet. He is a sports person and concludes that he is having athlete’s foot disease. Even after using antifungal medication he is suffering from situations such as, yellow thicken toenails which are detaching from the nail bed.
(b)
To determine:
What is the treatment for diagnosed disease and if two fungal species caused the disease then will the medication be same or different.

- Explain how unbroken skin, the phagocytic action of neutrophilsand macrophages, inflammation, and cell-mediated immunity allhelp to protect against staphylococcal infection.arrow_forwardIncrease in body temperature should increase the rate of metabolism of microbes instead of killing them. How fever helps our bodies fight infection? Please be specific in details.arrow_forwardCan your body fight off Lyme disease on its own?arrow_forward
- Sir Robert, a 42-year-old male, returned to his home in England after an adventure along the Nile Delta. On arrival at his estate, Sir Robert began to experience chills and a fever. The fever remained high for about 2 days and then subsided but spiked again after 5 days. He also noticed an abscess on his right leg, which had become swollen, inflamed, and hot. After a few days, his leg began to enlarge. A this point, Sir Robert promptly set-up an appointment with his physician for 4:00pm the next day. On determining the patient's recent travel history and performing a physical examination, the physician ordered blood and stool samples for parasite study. In addition, the physician surgically opened the abscess and obtained a sample of the contents for parasitic examination. Laboratory examination of the abscess and stool specimens revealed no parasites. However, the Giemsa-stained slide of the blood contained suspicious organisms, each measuring approximately 260μm in length.…arrow_forwardThe dead outer surface of skin (not mucous membranes) uses which of the following innate defenses to inhibit microbial growth? Choose all that apply. Group of answer choices Prion production Interferon production Low pH Drynessarrow_forwardUsing the diagram below answer the following: What is a role of minor H antigens in skin graft rejection process? What is a difference between cases of graft rejected rapidly vs graft rejected slowly? What requirements have to be met to insure that graft will be tolerated? What testing should be performed to prevent rejection?arrow_forward
- Sarah passed out during a track meet. Her coach rushed her to the hospital, guessing she had a heat stroke. However, she also had fever and rashes. Medical staffs suspected toxic chock, which was supported by a soaked strong odor tampon removed from her body. List the key factors and the mechanism that cause this life-threatening disease.arrow_forwardIn 1985 a Paterson, N.J., Fire Department ambulance responded to a call reporting two people with severe itching, which they attributed to "voodoo beans" found in their beds. Soon after arriving the ambulance medical technicians developed the same symptoms. All four of the individuals went to the emergency room where they were found to have rashes on various parts of the body in addition to their itch. The admitting nurse, who put her arm around one patient, also developed a rash and itch on her arm. A policeman who went to the apartment the following day and a trash collector at the building also developed itching and received emergency room treatment. In all cases, symptoms disappeared in 1-2 hours. An industrial hygienist went to the site in complete protective gear to look for possible chemical contamination. Visual inspection and screens for ionized organic vapors were negative, but he retrieved a bean pod. The botanical specimen was sent to Rutgers University, where the plant was…arrow_forwardAre antibiotics useful for the common cold or purulent rhinitis? Why or why not?arrow_forward
- Which is NOT a role of sebum in the innate immune system. Group of answer choices dehydrates microbes keeps skin pliable and less likely to tear contains antimicrobial proteins lowers pHarrow_forwardExplain the following Sweat glands in the armpits secrete perspiration with a pH close to neutral (7.0). How does this fact help explain body odor in this area as compared to other parts of the skin? Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preferentially destroys CD4+ cells. Specifically, what effect does this have on antibody and cell-mediated immunity? How does a phagocyte “know” it is in contact with a pathogen instead of another body cell?arrow_forwardWhat feature of the skin creates a physical barrier to microbial invasion? Group of answer choices The outer layers are composed of cells full of protein which forms NETs to trap microbes until they are shed. The surface is constantly patrolled by phagocytic cells. The outer layers are dead cells, tightly linked together, and are frequently shed. All of these mechanisms can provide defense against microbial invaders. The oil secreted onto the surface of the skin traps microbes, preventing penetration. The fine hairs move microbes to mucous membranes for phagocytosis.arrow_forward
