A spy satellite uses a telescope with a 2.0-m-diameter mirror. It orbits the earth at a height of 220 km. What minimum spacing must there be between two objects on the earth’s surface if they are to be resolved as distinct objects by this telescope? Assume the telescope’s resolution is limited only by diffraction and that it is recording light with a wavelength of 500 nm.

- A plano-convex lens has index of refraction n. The curved side of the lens has radius of curvature R and rests on a flat glass surface of the same index of refraction, with a film of index nflim between them, as shown in Figure P36.42. The lens is illuminated from above by light of wavelength . Show that the dark Newtons rings have radii given approximately by r=mRnfilm where r R and m is an integer. What angular magnification does it produce when a 3.00 m-focal length eyepiece is used?arrow_forwardA spy satellite circles Earth at an altitude of 200. km and carries out surveillance with a special high-resolution telescopic camera having a lens diameter of 35 cm. If the angular resolution of this camera is limited by diffraction, estimate the separation of two small objects on Earth’s surface that are just resolved in yellow-green lightarrow_forward
- What was the major problem with the Hubble Space Telescope when it was first launched unto orbit? a. It's antenna wouldn't open, so the data could not be sent back to earth b. It was in the wrong orbit, so it dipped down into the Earth's thicker atmosphere regularly c. It's spectroscope broke during the launch d. The mirror's shape was slightly wrong, so all the light did not come to a single focusarrow_forwardA lens coated with a thin layer of material having a refractive index 1.45 reflects the least amount of light at wavelength 590nm. Assume the refractive index of the lens material to be 1.70. Determine the minimum thickness of the coating.arrow_forwardThe primary mirror of the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope has a diameter of 2.40 m. Being in orbit, this telescope avoids the degrading effects of atmospheric distortion on its resolution. What is the angle between two just-resolvable point light sources (perhaps two stars)? Assume an average light wavelength of 550 nm.arrow_forward
- A certain telescope has an objective mirror with an aperture diameter of 200 mm and a focal length of 2 000 mm. It captures the image of a nebula on photographic film at its prime focus with an exposure time of 1.50 min. To produce the same light energy per unit area on the film, what is the required exposure time to photograph the same nebula with a smaller telescope that has an objective with a 60.0-mm diameter and a 900-mm focal length?arrow_forwardA coating, 177.4 nm thick, is applied to a lens to minimize reflections. Therespective indexes of refraction of the coating and of the lens material are 1.55and 1.48. What wavelength in air is minimally reflected for normal incidence inthe smallest thickness? Draw a diagram as part of your solution.arrow_forwardThe objective lens of a certain refracting telescope has a diameter of 57.0 cm. The telescope is mounted in a satellite that orbits the Earth at an altitude of 335 km to view objects on the Earth's surface.
