Diagnosis in the Desert
In the 1970s, archeologists unearthed a vast cemetery in the Atacama Desert of Chile. Because the Atacama is the driest desert on Earth, bodies over 800 years old were better preserved than might be expected. Some facial and brain tissues were mummified. The skulls of four women appeared as if the bone had been eaten, though it was obvious to the archeologists that the women had lived with the condition and died from other causes. It wasn’t until 2009 that scientists were able to solve the mystery of these skulls. Genetic analysis of tissue samples revealed that a flagellated protozoan had moved from facial lesions to the women’s skulls, slowly eating them away over a 20-year period.

- 2. How did the women become infected?
- 3. If the women were infected today, what treatment would be given?

- Cystic Fibrosis APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED You are a researcher working on a treatment for Hutchinson Gilford progeria syndrome, an extrernely rare genetic disorder that causes accelerated aging in children. Children with progeria generally appear healthy at birth but soon start growing more slowly than other children and lose their hair. Additional symptoms include stiffness of joints, heart problems, and stroke. These children typically die of heart disease at an average age of 13 years. 5. Progeria is caused by a mutation in a single gene, called lamin A. Scientists have identified over 1,400 mutations in the lamin A gene that result in changes in transcription, RNA splicing, and/or protein production. Lamin A codes fora protein required for the structural support of the nuclear envelope in cells. Without a functional protein, the nuclear envelope becomes unstable, eventually damaging the nucleus and causing cells to die, Based on what you learned in this Click & Learn, propose a…arrow_forwardCan someone explain this please in the book I am sure it said 4 or 2 but I am not honeslty sure at this point.arrow_forwardDefend this statement: “The investigations of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek changed the world forever.”arrow_forward
