Concept explainers
Punch a couple of holes in the bottom of a water-filled container, and water will spurt out because of water pressure (left of figure). Now drop the container and watch what happens. Explain your observations. (Hint: What happens to g, and hence weight, and hence pressure in the reference frame of the falling container?)
To explain: The observations of two hole water container .
Explanation of Solution
Introduction
Gravitational pull: It is the force exert by the Earth on the object.
When a container filled with water is kept on a table that time gravitational force acts on water and a pressure will acts on water due to this gravitational pull and pressure water will come our from the holes. On the other hand when container undergoes a free fall then gravitational force will act on both container and water, therefore water will move in downward direction within the container only and it would not come out from the hole.
By the equation,
From above equation it is clear that pressure on water is directly proportional to the height at which container is kept. Therefore due to this pressure water will come out from the hole. On the other hand, when container undergoes a free fall then gravitational force will act on both container and water, therefore water will move in downward direction within the container only and it would not come out from the hole
Conclusion:
Water will not come out of holes in second case.
