An atomic ion is one that consists of only one atom with a positive or negative charge. A positive ion is formed when an atom looses one or more electrons and is known as the cation. While a negative ion is formed when an atom gains one or more electrons and is known as the anion. The ability of gaining or losing of electrons is based on the electronic structure of that atom.
