Concept explainers
To determine: The reason why glycine has no stereoisomers.
Introduction:
The amino acids or compounds that contain same molecular formula but different molecular structure are termed as isomers. The isomers that are differing with each other in spatial arrangements and contain the same bond formation are termed as stereoisomers.
Amino acids contain a central carbon atom, a hydrogen atom, an amino group (NH2), a carboxyl group (-COOH), and an R-group. Amino acids occur in L (laevorotatory) or D (dextrorotatory) form and L and D form are termed as stereoisomer. The two amino acids are mirror images of each other; hence they occur in two forms. D-form amino acids causes the bending of light clockwise while L-form amino acids causes the bending of light anti-clockwise
