One of the important class of compounds is acids. Prefix “hydro-“ is added for naming an acid and the end is changed as “-ic” instead of “-ide” followed by acid. Naming this way represent that the compounds are present in water.
Polyatomic anions that contain oxygen has the name usually ending with “-ate” and “-ite”. Acid formed form the polyatomic anions are named by replacing the suffix with “-ic” and “-ous” for “-ate” and “-ite” respectively followed by the word “acid”.
