A hare and a tortoise compete in a race over a straight course 1.00 km long. The tortoise crawls at a speed of 0.200 m/s toward the finish line. The hare runs at a speed of 8.00 m/s toward the Finish line for 0.800 km and then stops to tease the slow-moving tortoise as the tortoise eventually passes by. The hare waits for a while after the tortoise passes and then runs toward the finish line again at 8.00 m/s. Both the hare and the tortoise cross the finish line at the exact same instant. Assume both animals, when moving, move steadily at their respective speeds. (a) How far is the tortoise from the finish line when the hare resumes the racer (b) For how long in time was the hare stationary?

- Ben starts walking along a path at 33 mi/h. One and a half hours after Ben leaves, his sister Amanda begins jogging along the same path at 55 mi/h. How long (in hours) will it be before Amanda catches up to Ben?arrow_forwardA speedboat has a velocity of 48 kph as it comes out of a turn. It accelerates at the rate of 0.3 m/sec^2 for the first ½ km of the straightway and then maintains this final velocity for the next ½ km. How long did it take to cover the km?arrow_forwardA race car completes a lap on a 1600 m long track with an average speed of 250 km/h. If the car's average speed on the first half of the track was 230 km/h, what was its average speed (in km/h) on the second half?arrow_forward
- After feeding, an arctic tern is flying back to its nest at 24km/h for 72 kilometres. It then starts to snow so the bird slows to 18 km/h. The bird arrives back at the nest after flying for a total of 7 hours and 20 minutes. How far is the nest from the feeding ground?arrow_forwardA horse and a squirrel participate in a race over a 2.00 km long course. The horse travels at a speed of 15.0 m/s and the squirrel can do 3.70 m/s. The horse runs for 1.600 km and then stops to tease the slow-moving squirrel, which eventually passes by. The horse waits for a while after the squirrel passes and then runs toward the finish line. Both animals cross the finish line at the exact same instant. Assume both animals, when moving, move steadily at their respective speeds. (a) How far (in m) is the squirrel from the finish line when the horse resumes the race? (b) For how long in time (in s) was the horse stationary?arrow_forwardA man and his dog are out for a run at 12 km/hr, traveling toward a road 100 km away. At the 30 km mark, he decides to unleash the dog, and it runs back and forth between its owner and the road at 35 km/hr (fast dog) while he continues at his same pace. What is the total distance the dog has run by the time the man reaches the road? 234 km 200 km 300 km 156 kmarrow_forward
- A pilot flies in a straight path for 1 h 30 min. She then makes a course correction, heading 10 degrees to the right of her original course, and flies 2 h in the new direction. If she maintains a constant speed of 640 mi/h, how far is she from her starting position?Your answer is______mi;arrow_forwardIn an 8.00 kmkm race, one runner runs at a steady 11.2 km/hkm/h and another runs at 14.9 km/hkm/h. How far from the finish line is the slower runner when the faster runner finishes the race? Express your answer in kilometers to three significant figures.arrow_forwardA lion and a pig participate in a race over a 2.00 km long course. The lion travels at a speed of 19.0 m/s and the pig can do 2.70 m/s. The lion runs for 1.600 km and then stops to tease the slow-moving pig, which eventually passes by. The lion waits for a while after the pig passes and then runs toward the finish line. Both animals cross the finish line at the exact same instant. Assume both animals, when moving, move steadily at their respective speeds. (a) How far (in m) is the pig from the finish line when the lion resumes the race? Answer:_______________m (b) For how long in time (in s) was the lion stationary? Answer:_____________sarrow_forward
- A turtle and a rabbit engage in a footrace over a distance of 4km. The rabbit runs 0.5km and then stops for a 90-min nap. Upon awakening, he remembers the race and runs twice as fast. Finishing the course in a total time of 1.75h, the rabbit wins the race. Calculate the average speed of the rabbitarrow_forwardA runner with a good awareness of her pace runs along a path of unknown length at a speed of 0.275 mi/min and then walks back to her starting point at a speed of 0.0500 mi/min. She neglects to note her time for each part of her path, but does measure the total round trip time to be 60.0 min. How far did she run? Do not include the walking distancearrow_forwardA student launches a small rocket which starts from rest at ground level. At a height h=1.04km, the rocket reaches a speed of vf=391m/s. At that height, the rocket runs out of fuel, so there is no longer any thrust propelling it. After the rocket's engine turns off at a height of h=1.04km, it continues to move upward due to the velocity that it reached. What is the rocket's acceleration, in meters per squared second, during the period from engine shutoff until it returns to the ground? Ignore air resistance.arrow_forward
