Concept explainers
Interpretation: The elements that exists in gas at room temperature to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Conversion of atoms to moles:
Nuclear stability: The nucleus is composed of protons and neutrons. The strongest nuclear force binds the particles tightly. Though the protons repel each other due to no attraction between similar charges, possess short-range attractions made the attraction possible between proton and proton, proton and neutron, neutron and neutron.
The stability of any element is determined by the difference between columbic repulsion and the short-range attraction. If repulsion outweighs the attraction, the disintegration of nucleus occurs by producing the daughter nuclides. If the attractive forces prevail, the nucleus is stable.

- Given that the periodic table is an organizational scheme for the elements, what might be some other logical ways in which to group the elements that would provide meaningful chemical information in a periodic table of your own devising?arrow_forwardTwo elements, R and Q, combine to form two binary compounds. In the first compound, 14.0 g of R combines with 3.00 g of Q. In the second compound, 7.00 g of R combines with 4.50 g of Q. Show that these data are in accord with the law of multiple proportions. If the formula of the second compound is RQ, what is the formula of the first compound?arrow_forward2.41 How does the periodic table help to make the study of chemistry more systematic?arrow_forward
- There are 2.619 1022 atoms in 1.000 g of sodium. Assume that sodium atoms are spheres of radius 1.86 and that they are lined up side by side. How many miles in length is the line of sodium atoms?arrow_forwardWhat defines an element? How many naturally occurring elements exist?arrow_forwardAre most elements found in nature in the elemental or the combined form? Why? Name several elements that are usually found in the elemental form.arrow_forward
- See the definition for isobars in Question 15. Consider Cr-54, Fe-54, Fess, and Ni-S8. (a) Which of these are isobars? Which are isotopes? (b) What do Fe-S4 and Fe-58 have in common? (c) Which atoms have the same number of neutrons?arrow_forwardArgon has three naturally occurring isotopes: 0.3336% 36Ar, 0.063% 38Ar, and 99.60% 40Ar. Estimate the average atomic mass of argon. If the masses of the isotopes are 35.968 u, 37.963 u, and 39.962 u, respectively, calculate the average atomic mass of natural argon.arrow_forwardThere are 1.699 1022 atoms in 1.000 g of chlorine. Assume that chlorine atoms are spheres of radius 0.99 and that they are lined up side by side in a 0.5-g sample. How many miles in length is the line of chlorine atoms in the sample?arrow_forward
