The structural formulas and the IUPAC names of the nine alkanes that have the molecular formula C7H16 are to be written.

Concept introduction:

Alkanes have the general formula CnH2n+2, and they have only single bonds.

Constitutional isomers are compounds, which have the same molecular formula but different arrangement of atoms.

Depending on the parent chain in each structure, the IUPAC name for each isomer is written.

The chain is numbered such that the substituents attached get lowest numbers.

Prefixes are used to denote number of identical substituents.

The substituents are written in alphabetical order when writing the IUPAC name.
