Concept explainers
To determine:
The missing vessel from the given sequence: tracing the circulation to and from the placenta, a drop of blood travels in the fetus from the left ventricle to the aorta, to a common iliac artery, to an internal iliac artery, to an umbilical artery, to capillaries in the placenta, to the ductus venosus, to a hepatic vein, to the inferior vena cava, to the right atrium, to the foramen ovale, to the left atrium, to the left ventricle.
Introduction:
Placenta is an organ that is present during fetus development in placental mammals. The placenta serves as a conducting unit between the fetus and the mother’s body for the transportation of blood, nutrients, and waste products to and from the fetus and the mother’s body. Umbilical cord is present between the developing embryo/fetus and the placenta.

HUMAN ANATOMY PKG >CUSTOM<
- List the five structures of fetal circulation, and identify the function of each.arrow_forwardA young couple that you are friends with gave birth to a new baby. They were told by their physician that the foramen ovale did not close between the right atrium and left atrium (i.e., that their baby has “a hole in her heart”). They know that you are a nurse and have come to you to help them to understand what is going on. Explain both the normal flow of blood through the heart and the flow with the foramen ovale still open. Include in your description the concept of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.arrow_forwardDraw and Label the sheep’s heart in the external anterior and posterior views. Include the coronary arteries and cardiac veins. List the similarities and differences in the microanatomy of arteries and veins.arrow_forward
