Chapter 20, Problem 2AL
Summary Introduction

Archaea can be categorized into six groups based on morphological and physiological differences. However, Bergey’s manual of systemic bacteriology, a taxonomic organization divides archaea into two phyla Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota. There are three types of carbon fixation that have been characterized in archaea. This includes the reductive acetyl-CoA pathway, dicarboxylate/4-hydroxybutyrate cycle (DC/HB), and the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate cycle (HP/HB). The dicarboxylate/4-hydroxybutyrate cycle (DC/HB) is an autotrophic pathway, which occurs commonly occurs in two Crenarchaeota family includes, Desulfurococcales and Thermoproteales.

Contrast autotrophy in the following phototrophs:cyanobacteria; purple and green sulfur bacteria; Chloroflexus.
. The anaerobic, chemoautotrophic archaeobacterium Methanococcus jannaschii uses which of the following carbon-fixation pathways to obtain organic carbon from CO2? the Hill reaction the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway the Calvin cycle oxygenic photosynthesis the Krebs cycle
Explain why the statement is true. Photosynthesis is hypothesized to have been made possible by the appearance of chlorophyll associated with the mesozones of the cyanobacterial
