Chapter 20, Problem 36P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The deficiencies in glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase frequently present as anemia.

Concept introduction:

The deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is a form of genetic disorder found mostly in males. The condition affects red blood cells carrying oxygen from the lungs to the tissues all through the body. In individuals affected with anemia the defect in the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase brings about premature breakdown of RBCs and is commonly known as hemolysis.

Predict which one of the five steps of the α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex reaction is metabolically irreversible under physiological conditions and explain why.
Working at cross-purposes? Gluconeogenesis takes place during intense exercise, which seems counterintuitive. Why would an organism synthesize glucose and at the same time use glucose to generate energy?
