Concept explainers
England Productions performs London shows. The average show sells 1,300 tickets at $60 per ticket. There are 175 shows per year. No additional shows can be held as the theater is also used by other production companies. The average show has a cast of 65, each earning a net average of $340 per show. The cast is paid after each show. The other variable cost is a program-printing cost of $8 per guest. Annual fixed costs total $728,000.
Requirements
- 1. Compute revenue and variable costs for each show.
- 2. Use the equation approach to compute the number of shows England Productions must perform each year to break even.
- 3. Use the contribution margin ratio approach to compute the number of shows needed each year to earn a profit of $5,687,500. Is this profit goal realistic? Give your reasoning.
- 4. Prepare England Production’s contribution margin income statement for 175 shows performed in 2018. Report only two categories of costs: variable and fixed.

Country Enterprises has approached Dimitri to buy 800 chairs for $210 each. Dimitris normal variable cost is $165 per chair, including $50 per unit in direct labor per chair. Dimitri can produce the special order on an overtime shift, which means that direct labor would be paid overtime at 150% of the normal pay rate. The annual fixed costs will be unaffected by the special order and the contract will not disrupt any of Dimitris other operations. What will be the impact on profits of accepting the order?arrow_forwardMarkson and Sons leases a copy machine with terms that include a fixed fee each month plus acharge for each copy made. Markson made 9,000 copies and paid a total of $480 in January. In April, they paid $320 for 5,000 copies. What is the variable cost per copy if Markson uses the high-low method to analyze costs?arrow_forward
- Variety Artisans has a bottleneck in their production that occurs within the engraving department. Arjun Naipul, the COO, is considering hiring an extra worker, whose salary will be $45,000 per year, to solve the problem. With this extra worker, the company could produce and sell 3,500 more units per year. Currently, the selling price per unit is $18 and the cost per unit is $5.85. Using the information provided, calculate the annual financial impact of hiring the extra worker.arrow_forwardMarlin Motors sells a single product with a selling price of $400 with variable costs per unit of $160. - Gent Designs requires three units of part A for every unit of Al that it produces. Currently, part A is made by Gent, with these per-unit costs in a month when 4.000 units were produced: Variable manufacturing overhead is applied at $1.00 per unit. The other $0.30 of overhead consists of allocated fixed costs. Gent will need 6,000 units of part A for the next years production. Cory Corporation has offered to supply 6,000 units of part A at a price of $7.00 per unit. It Gent accepts the offer, all of the variable costs and $1,200 of the fixed costs will be avoided. Should Gent Designs accept the offer from Cory Corporation?arrow_forwardRemarkable Enterprises requires four units of part A for every unit of Al that it produces. Currently, part A is made by Remarkable, with these per-unit costs in a month when 4,000 units were produced: Variable manufacturing overhead is applied at $1.60 per unit. The other $0.50 of overhead consists of allocated fixed costs. Remarkable will need 8,000 units of part A for the next years production. Altoona Corporation has offered to supply 8,000 units of part A at a price of $8.00 per unit. If Remarkable accepts the offer, all of the variable costs and $2,000 of the fixed costs will be avoided. Able Transport drove the tour bus 4,000 miles and paid a total of $1,250 in March. In April, they paid $970 for 3.000 miles. - Deuce Sporting Goods manufactures a high-end model tennis racket. The company’s forecasted income statement for the year, before any special orders, is as follows: Fixed costs included in the forecasted income statement are $400,000 in manufacturing cost of goods sold and $200,000 in selling expenses. A new client placed a special order with Deuce, offering to buy 1,000 tennis rackets for $100.00 each. The company will incur no additional selling expenses if it accepts the special order. Assuming that Deuce has sufficient capacity to manufacture 1,000 more tennis rackets, by what amount would differential income increase (decrease) as a result of accepting the special order? (Hint: First compute the variable cost per unit relevant to this decision.)arrow_forwardJansen Crafters has the capacity to produce 50,000 oak shelves per year and is currently selling 44,000 shelves for $32 each. Cutrate Furniture approached Jansen about buying 1,200 shelves for bookcases it is building and is willing to pay $26 for each shelf. No packaging will be required for the bulk order. Jansen usually packages shelves for Home Depot at a price of $1.50 per shell. The $1.50 per-shelf cost is included in the unit variable cost of $27, with annual fixed costs of $320.000. However, the $130 packaging cost will not apply in this case. The fixed costs will be unaffected by the special order and the company has the capacity to accept the order. Based on this information, what would be the profit if Jansen accepts the special order? A. Profits will decrease by $1,200. B. Profits will increase by $31,200. C. Profits will increase by $600. D. Profits will increase by $7,200.arrow_forwardHatch Manufacturing produces multiple machine parts. The theoretical cycle time for one of its products is 65 minutes per unit. The budgeted conversion costs for the manufacturing cell dedicated to the product are 12,960,000 per year. The total labor minutes available are 1,440,000. During the year, the cell was able to produce 0.6 units of the product per hour. Suppose also that production incentives exist to minimize unit product costs. Required: 1. Compute the theoretical conversion cost per unit. 2. Compute the applied conversion cost per minute (the amount of conversion cost actually assigned to the product). 3. Discuss how this approach to assigning conversion cost can improve delivery time performance. Explain how conversion cost acts as a performance driver for on-time deliveries.arrow_forward
