To determine: The oxidation state of iron in each Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 compound; the ratio of Fe3+ to Fe2+ ions in magnetite; if the formula of magnetite FeOFe2O3   makes any sense.

Explanation

In complex ion Fe2O3 , the oxidation state of Oxygen atom (O) is 2 .

It is assumed that oxidation state of metal ion Iron (Fe) is x .

The given compound contains three Oxygen atoms and two iron atoms. Since, overall charge on stable compound is zero.

The sum of the oxidation states of the constituent atoms in a compound is equal o the overall charge on the given compound. Therefore,

3(2)+2x=0x=+3

Therefore, the oxidation state of Iron is +3 .

In complex ion Fe3O4 , the oxidation state of Oxygen atom (O) is 2 .

It is assumed that oxidation state of metal ion Iron (Fe) is x .

The given compound contains four Oxygen atoms and three iron atoms. Since, overall charge on stable compound is zero.

The sum of the oxidation states of the constituent atoms in a compound is equal o the overall charge on the given compound. Therefore,

4(2)+3x=0x=+83

Therefore, the oxidation state of Iron is +83 .

The compound magnetite contains four Oxygen atoms and three iron atoms. The ratio Fe3+ to Fe2+ can be determined by looking at the total charge on iron. Since, magnetite contains four Oxygen atoms, therefore, total charge on oxygen is 8 .

Since, overall charge on stable compound is zero. Therefore, total charge on iron should be +8 to neutralize the charge. The only possible combination of Fe3+ and Fe2+ to make the total charge +8 is 2Fe3+ and Fe2+
