Chapter 20.2, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction

To explain: The role of complementary base-pairing in RT-PCR, DNA microarray analysis, RNA sequencing, and CRISPR-Cas9 editing.

Concept introduction:

The gene functions can be studied through its expression in a particular cell and its interaction with other genes. To study the gene expression, specific mRNAs corresponding to the gene of interest are to be identified. The methods used for these include RT-PCR, DNA microarray analysis, and RNA sequencing. These are based on the base-pairing between the nucleotides. Complementarity of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) is the manner in which the bases will pair with each other. If the sequence of one DNA strand is known, then the sequence of its complementary strand can be predicted.
