Explanation There are some isomers of hydrocarbon which when placed in the path of plane polarized light start rotating light into either clockwise or in anticlockwise direction, this phenomenon is called optical isomerism and the isomers are called stereo isomers. Conditions for optical isomers: 1. They must be chiral or they must have an asymmetrical carbon atom in them. 2. They should be non-superimpossible mirror image of each other. According to direction of rotation of light they are classified into two types: 1.
