Concept introduction:
DNA profiling is a technique used in forensic studies for criminal investigations such as comparison of one or more individual's profile to the DNA found at any crime scene to assess the involvement of any criminal in the crime. DNA profiling is done based on highly variable repetitive sequences which are known as variable number tandem repeats or VNTRs. Particularly short tandem repeats or STRs are also known as microsatellites and minisatellites. VNTR locus is very similar between closely related individuals but is quite variable among unrelated individuals who are very unlikely to have the same VNTRs.
