Chapter 2.1, Problem 1RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: An example of a molecule that is an element and an example of a molecule that is compound needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction: Matter is something that has mass and volume. Almost everything around us is considered as matter except gas; it is made up of very small particles. All materials are made up of tiny particles, known as atoms.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

An example of a molecule that is an element: By combining Nitrogen and nitrogen atoms, you will get N2 . This is chemical element.

An example of a molecule that is compound: By combining Hydrogen and oxygen, you will get water. This is compound.

Explanation of Solution

Element is a substance containing a single kind of atoms and a compound has contains two or more than two different kinds of atoms.

A molecule is formed when two or more than two atoms combine. Molecules can be different in shape as well as size. If a molecule is made up of the same type of atoms, an element will be formed. For example, when you combine Nitrogen and nitrogen atoms, you will get N2 .

If a molecule is made from atoms from different types of elements,a compound will be formed. For Example: when you will combine Hydrogen & oxygen, you will get water.
