Concept explainers
The absolute age of a rock is its age in years. The absolute age of sedimentary rocks can be determined by dating igneous rocks that have a crosscutting relationship with sedimentary rocks. Suppose there is additional evidence that indicates the basalt in Figure 21.13 was intruded before the limestone and shale were tilted. The basalt is 55.8 million years old. and the granite is 41.2 million years old. Page 545
What is the possible absolute age at which the limestone and shale were tilted?

- The diagram below shows the layers of rock having an ammonite: Which statement about the rock fossils is true? (4 points) a Fossil Y is older than fossil X. b Fossil Z is younger than fossil Y. c Fossil Z existed over many periods of time. d Fossil Y existed during the same period as the ammonite.arrow_forwardYou want to use radiometric dating to determine the age of a specimen. You use Isotope Z, which has a half-life of 645 years. You measure your sample and find that 1/16 of the original amount of Isotope Z is present. How old is the sample?arrow_forwardHEIGHT OF A CONTINENT ABOVE THE MANTLE. In the figure below, a simple model considers a continent as a block (density = 2,800 kg/m^3) floating in the mantle (density = 3,300 kg/m3). Assuming the continent is 35 km thick (the average thickness of the Earth's crust), estimate the height (in km) of the continent above the surrounding mantle. Continent (density = 2800 kg/m3) mg Mantle rock (density = 3300 kg/m³) 5.3. 7.4. 9.8 12. 17.arrow_forward
- A fossilized leaf contains 70% Of its normal amount of carbon- 14. How old is the fossil? Use 5730 yesrs as the half-life of carbon- 14.arrow_forwardHow does physics apply to these geological processes (volcanic eruptions, mountain formation, deposition)? Please explain.arrow_forward1. How old is a rock if the mineral biotite from the rock has 85,000 40K atoms and 15.000 40Ar atoms? Note: 40K decays to 40Ar with half-life = 1.3 billion years. 2. Isotopic analysis of a granitic intrusion indicates that 6.25 % of the original 40K is present. Analysis of a nearby basaltic intrusion indicates that 25 % of the original amount of 40K is present. What is the absolute age of both the granitic intrusion and the dike? What is the relationship between them? I. 3. Pebbles of an igneous rock are incorporated within a conglomerate. The pebbles yield a radiometric age of 200 million years. What can you say about age of the conglomerate based on this data? 4. A radioactive parent isotope with 600 atoms. After the decay, 450 daughter atoms were produced. Calculate the age of the rock if you know that the half-life of the parent isotope is 20 million years.arrow_forward
- The Richter Soale is a simple equation for measuring intensity of an earthquake, according to the formula R=log(I), where I is Intensity of an earthquake and Ris the Richter scale rating. The largest earthquake in the year 2006 was in the ocean that was recorded as an 8.3 on the Richter Scale. The most devastating earthquake was in a major city that registered 6.6 on the Richter Scale. How many times more intense was the quake in the ocean? a) The intensity of the 8.3 earthquake was: You can write it as a power of 10 b) The intensity of the 6.6 earthquake was: FYou can write it as a power of 10} c) The quake in the ocean was times more intense than the one in the city. Use the speed of Pacific plate motion given in Problem 7 to estimate how long ago the direction of plate motion changed. (Note: It may not be a coincidence that the San Andreas fault became active in what is now Southern California at about the same time.) 7. The Hawaiian-Emperor chain of undersea volcanoes is about 7500 km long, and the Pacific plate is moving 9.2 cm a year. How old is the oldest detectable volcano in the chain? What has happened to older volcanoes in the chain?arrow_forwardAre dinosaur footprints fossils?arrow_forward
