Answer to Problem 4STP

Correct option is D.

Explanation of Solution

Temperature dependence on the solubitlity of solid:

On rising the temperature of the solution, the mean kinetic energy of the solution’s molecules increases. As a result, the more energetic solvent molecules (liquid; mainly water) break down the attractive intermolecular bonds of solute molecules (solid; in this case) more effectively.

On the other hand, With rise in temeprature the mean kinetic energy of solute moleclues (solid) also increases and as a result, the solid state becomes unstable or say, the strength of the bonds of solute molecules weakens and hence dissolve more rapidly.

Temperature dependence on the solubitlity of gas:

The solubility of a gas decrease on rising the temperature of the solution. A solution having lower temperature possess more amount of gas in comparison to a solution with a higher temperature.

On rising the temperature of the solution, the mean kinetic energy of the solution’s molecules increases which causes more motion in molecules that leads to break down of intermolecular bonds. Hence, gas escape from the solution. For example: Boiled water also tastes "plane" because all of the oxygen gas has been escaped due to heating.

Conclusion:

Thus, as the temperature increases the solubility of gases decreases, and the solubility of solid increases.
