Answer to Problem 9R

The percentage increase in surface area after increases the length 10% is 8.57%.

Explanation of Solution

Given info:

Length =2 centimeter.

Width =1 centimeter.

Height =0.5 centimeter.

Formula used:

For rectangular solid, surface area is

  A=2(wl+hl+hw)

Calculation:

  10%of2=(2×10)÷100=0.2cm

Total length=2+0.2

  =2.2 cm

Substituting the given values

  A=2(wl+hl+hw)

  A=2(1×2.2+0.5×2.2+0.5×1)=7.6cm

Total increase in surface area is =7.67=0.6 cm

Percentage increase in surface area

  =(0.6)7×100=8.57%

Conclusion:

The percentage increase in surface area after increases the length 10% is 8.57%.
