Concept introduction:
The group responsible for the characteristic properties of a compound is known as a functional group. The oxygen atom attached to a hydrogen atom through a single bond is the hydroxyl group. Group in which carbon is bonded to an oxygen atom through double bond is called carbonyl group. The group in which the carbonyl group is attached to the hydroxyl group through a single bond is called the carboxyl group.
