Introduction:
On some conditions, the immune system fails to differentiate among the self-antigen and foreign antigen (a condition called self-tolerance) and attack the body’s own tissues by producing autoantibodies. This autoantibody is also known as self-reactive antibodies. This self-reactive antibody attacks the body’s own tissues, which leads to an autoimmune disease. The basic cause of immunodeficiency diseases is the failure of the immune system to react (respond) strongly. Examples of immunodeficiency disease are acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID).

- Describe a type of autoimmune disease. There are many of them. What is an autoimmune disease? Who is susceptible? What is the suggested cause? What is the prognosis for someone with the autoimmune disease that you chose. How is the disease treated?arrow_forwardPus is both a sign of infection and an indicator ofimmune defenses in action. Explain.arrow_forwardAn important aspect of the immune system is the physical separation of the blood lymphatics, extracellular fuld and reticuloendothelial system, so that cells and chemicals of the immune system are isolated from one another True or Falsearrow_forward
- Describe the mechanisms of fever and its role in nonspecific immunity.arrow_forwardWhen antibodies are created against a person’s own (“self”) antigens immunocompetence may result an immunodeficiency disorder may result an autoimmune disorder may resultarrow_forwardExplain how tolerance to self-antigens may be produced. Also, give two examples of autoimmune diseases and explain their possible causes.arrow_forward
