Summary Introduction

Peptidoglycan constitutes only a part of the total cell wall in the gram-negative bacteria and most of the part of the cell wall is made up of the outer membrane. The presence of outer membrane in a gram-negative bacterium provides only a modest strength to the cell. However, it plays a potential role in protecting the cytoplasmic membrane from several agents like lipophilic antibiotics and various substances harmful to the membrane.
