Chapter 2.13, Problem 101P
The cylindrical rod AB has a length L = 5 ft and a 0.75-in. diameter; it is made of a mild steel that is assumed to be elastoplastic with E= 29 × 106 psi and σY = 36 ksi. A force P is applied to the bar and then removed to give it a permanent set δp. Determine the maximum value of the force P and the maximum amount δm by which the bar should be stretched if the desired value of δp is (a) 0.1 in., (b) 0.2 in.

A straight bar 450 mm long is 10 mm in diameter for the first 200 mm length and 20 mm in diameter for the remaining length. If the bar is subjected to an axial push of 10 kN, determine decrease in length of the bar.
Take modulus of elasticity of bar material E = 2 × 105 N/mm²
2. A circular steel bar with with a diameter of 3 in and length of 2 m is subjected to an tensile force of 80 kN.
Determine the change in length and the change in its cross section if the material behaves elastically. Let y be the
longitudinal axis and Modulus of Elasticity be 200 GPa. Assume v=0.32
1. Steel rod 2.5m long is secured between tow walls. If the load on the rod is zero at 200C, compute the stress when temperature drops to (-200C). The cross-sectional area of the rod is 1200 mm2 α=11.7μ m/(m.0C) and E=200 GPa. Solve assuming (a) that the wall is rigid and (b) that the wall spring together a total distance of 0.500mm as the temperature drops.
2. The rigid bar ABC in Figure is pinned at B and attached to the two vertical rods. Initially, the bar is horizontal and the vertical rods are stress-free. Determine the stress in the aluminum rod if the temperature of the steel rod is decreased by 40°C. Neglect the weight of bar ABC.
