Chapter 21.4, Problem 1CR

Bacteria play major roles in both the oxidative and reductive sides of the sulfur cycle. Sulfur- and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria produce SO 4 2 , whereas sulfate-reducing bacteria consume SO 4 2 , producing H2S. Because sulfide is toxic and reacts with various metals, SO 4 2 reduction is an important biogeochemical process. Dimethyl sulfide is the major organic sulfur compound of ecological significance in nature.

Q    If sulfur chemolithotrophs had never evolved, would there be a problem in the microbial cycling of sulfur compounds? What impact would coastal marine eutrophication have on microbial sulfur transformations?

Which of these are valid sulfur cycle pathways? Sedimentation of thiosulfates Anoxic emission of sulfides Atmospheric S6 deposition O Elemental sulfur oxidation by Thiobacillus Mineralization of organic and inorganic sulfates O co2 photochemolithotrophic fixation by anaerobic bacteria Mineral formation from reduced sulfides
Which of the following statements is false?   A. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria may form hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as a product of the oxidation.   B. Dissimilatory reduction of metals such as Fe3+ to Fe2+ represents anaerobic respiration.   C. The nitrification reactions carried out by certain bacteria would be considered lithotrophy.   D. Denitrification reactions would be considered anaerobic respiration.
Can you show in a diagram how sulfur is cycled  (Sulfur cycle) in a water column (Winogradsky column) starting from sulfate? Please indicate the name of the important metabolic pathways and physiological groups involved.
