- Suppose an economy produces steel, wheat, and oil. The steel industry produces $80,000 in revenue, spends $4,000 on oil, $8,000 on wheat, pays workers $60,000. The wheat industry produces $120,000 in revenue, spends $20,000 on oil, $10,000 on steel, and pays workers $80,000. The oil industry produces $180,000 in revenue, spends $20,000 on wheat, $20,000 on steel, and pays workers $80,000. There is no government. There are neither exports nor imports, and none of the industries accumulate or deaccumulate inventories. Calculate GDP using the production and income approaches.arrow_forwardLori is a student who teaches golf on the weekend and in a year earns $20,000 after paying her taxes. Life expectancy at birth is 79.3 in Canada, 78.8 in the United States, 76.6 in China, and 72.3 in Russia. Freedom House rates political freedom each year, and its ratings are asfollows: Canada, 1.0; the United States, 1.5; Russia, 6.5; and China, 6.5 ((1.0 is the most free and 7.0 is the least free). How do life expectancy at birth and political freedom change the relative ranking of living standards that real GDP per person indicate? Question content area bottom Part 1 A. They don't change the relative ranking because they rank countries in a similar way as real GDP per person ranks them. B. - Suppose there are only two small countries in the world: Ascot, with a population of 30,000 people, and Delwich, with a population of 20,000 people. Ascot’s GDP is equal to $150 million, while Delwich’s GDP is $250 million. Delwich’s GNP has been estimated to be equal to $280 million. Use this information to calculate Ascot’s GNP, the GDP per capita in Ascot, and the GNP per capita in Delwich.arrow_forwardUSA Today noted that the destruction caused by three 2004 hurricanes, combined with the already high real-estate prices, were making people reconsider retiring to Florida. The cost of homeownership was increasing partly because past hurricanes had roughly doubled insurance premiums statewide. Construction costs could rise due to stricter building codes. Some people, however, did not expect the influx of retirees to change because the baby boom generation was approaching retirement age and Florida had long attracted many retirees. Which of the following factors is tending to move the demand curve for Florida housing to the right? a.The aging of the baby boomers, increasing the number of people who are retiring. b.The increase in the cost of insurance. c.The already high real-estate prices. d.The current high construction costs.arrow_forwardAfter World War II, Germany was divided into two parts, the German Democratic Republic (informally known as East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). East Germany was controlled by the former Soviet Union, while West Germany was controlled by the other Allied governments: the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The war had destroyed most of Germany’s economy. The Soviet Union as well as the Allied occupation forces sought to rebuild the economies of their respective parts. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall reunited East and West Germany in 1990, West Germany’s economy grew at an annual average growth rate of 4.4 percent, which was about 3 times higher than East Germany’s rate. Draw the parallel between the natural experiment discussed in the chapter and the case of East and West Germany. Based on the information given in the question and your own research, why do you think two otherwise similar areas had such divergent growth rates?arrow_forward
- The following table shows the results of operations of a dishwasher manufacturer in 2021. Price per dishwasher sold in 2021 $1,000 Total Number of dishwashers produced in 2021 9,000 Total number of dishwashers sold in 2021 8,000 Number of dishwashers sold in 2021 produced in 2020 2,000 Costs of parts and components used in production $2,000,000 Wages paid in 2021 $4,500,000 Rent and interest paid in 2021 $500,000 National income accountants will include dollars from the above table in the 2021 GDP. However, the manufacturer's value added in 2021 to the GDP only equals dollars. This is how much this producer's 2021 activities contributes to total GDP in 2021.
