Flow rates of water The speed at which water travels in a pipe can be measured by directing the flow through an elbow and measuring the higher to which it spurts out the top. If the elbow height is 10cm, the equation relating the height h (in centimeters) of the water above the elbow and its velocity v (in centimeter per second) is given by
Solve this equation for h and graph the result, using the velocity as the independent variable.

- Applications Waste management The corrosive waste is industrial sewage limits the useful life of the piping in a waste processing plant to 12 years. The piping system was originally worth 137,000, and it will cost the company 33, 000 to remove it at the end of its 12-year useful life. After 30 minutes, you pass a freeway exit that you know is 50 kilometers from your home. Assuming that you continue at the same constant speed, how long does the entire trip take?arrow_forwardPressure and Depth At the surface of the ocean the water pressure is the same as the air pressure above the water, 15lb/in2. Below the surface the water pressure increases by 4.34lb/in2 for every 10ft of descent. Find an equation for the relationship between the pressure and depth below the ocean surface. Sketch a graph of this linear equation. What do the slope and y-intercept of the graph represent? At what depth is the pressure 100lb/in2?arrow_forward
