Interpretation:

Two examples of diseases caused due to impaired transport of metabolites between compartments should be determined.

Concept introduction:

The molecules and ions move across the across the membranes by two systems, active transport system and passive transport system. The passive transport allows the molecules to move across the membrane down their concentration gradient, while active transport allows the molecules to move against their concentration gradient. The active transport process requires energy in the form of ATP.
