Two’s complement addition:

Consider two integer values “x” and “y” in the range -2w-1x,y2w-1-1 and their sum in the range -2wx+y2w-2. The result of given sum is represented by “w + 1” bits.

Calculate the two’s complement truncation by using below formula. That is for bit-level representation of the two’s-complement sum.

x +wt y = U2Tw[(x+y)mod2w]

To easily understand the above formula, assume

z=x+yz' = z mod 2wz''=U2T(z')

There are four cases in the two’s-complement addition.

  • Case 1:
    • It is the negative overflow case. The range occurs in -2wz<-2w-1. Then z' = z + 2w, giving 0z'<-2w-1+2w=2w-1.
    • In this case, user has added two negative numbers “x” and “y” and their result is in nonnegative number. Therefore, z''=x+y+2w
  • Case 2:
    • The range of this case is -2w-1z<0. Then it contains z' = z + 2w giving -2w-1+2w=2w-1z'<2w.
    • The range of “z’” in this case is z''=z'-2w

      z''=z'-2w=z + 2w-2w=>z'=z + 2wz''=z

    • Therefore, the two’s-complement sum “z''” equals the integer sum z=x+y.
  • Case 3:
    • The range of this case is 0z<2w-1. Then it contains z' = z giving 0z'<2w-1.
    • Therefore,z''=z'=z and also the two’s-complement sum “z''” equals the integer sum z=x+y.
  • Case 4:
    • It is the positive overflow case. The range occurs in 2w-1z<2w. Then z' = z, giving 2w-1z'<2w
      • But in this case, it contains z'' = z' - 2w giving z'' = (x + y) - 2w.
    • In this case, user has added two positive numbers “x” and “y” and their result is in negative number. Therefore,z''=x +y-2w

“B2T” function:

  • The two’s complement encoding is represented by the interpretation function of “B2Tw”.
    • The function “B2Tw” means “binary to two’s complement” of length “w”.
  • The equation for “B2Tw” is

B2Tw(x)=-xw-12w-1+i=0w-2xi2i

“U2T” function:

  • This function is used to convert the unsigned number to two’s-complement number.
  • The equation for computing this function is

U2Tw(u)=-uw-12w+u
