Interpretation:
The process that requires energy has to be identified. The reason for requirement of energy to move the solute across the membranes has to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Cell membrane:
The cell membrane it is a fluid mosaic, the semi-permeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell it is flexible and made up of different type of molecules.
Passive transport:
The transport of ions in the cell membrane which doesn’t need any energy, because the substances move from high concentration to low concentration, in this process only ions which are non-polar and small in size are allowed.
Active transport:
The transport of ions in the cell membrane which does need energy which is carried out by certain integral membrane proteins, because the substances move against the normal flow of concentration gradients

- Distinguish between the following pairs of terms: a. diffusion; osmosis b. passive transport; active transport c. endocytosis; exocytosisarrow_forwardThe passive movement of a solute through a membrane protein down its concentration gradient is an example of _________. a. osmosis b. active transport c. endocytosis d. diffusionarrow_forwardWhat is meant by active transport across a cell membrane?arrow_forward
- Which pathway represents "Direct" Active Transport and which pathway represents "Passive" Transport?arrow_forwardThese proteins are integral membrane proteins that serve as passages for hydrophilic molecules?arrow_forwardAs a cell grows its plasma membrane expands. Does this involve endocytosis or exocytosis? ATP is not directly involved in the functioning of a co-transporter. Why, then, is co-transport considered active transport?arrow_forward
- Why do cells lack membrane transport proteins that are specific for the movement of Oxygen?arrow_forwardDoes osmosis occur if a cell is placed in an isotonic solution?arrow_forwardIf your cell can use passive transport without having to use energy, why would a cell invest ATP to move particles using active transport?arrow_forward
